Description

These scales have either four (this example) or five holes in one end of the beam. A single egg is placed into one of the holes. The scale acts as a rocker, tipping if the egg exceeds the weight inscribed beside the hole in which the egg has been placed.

In this example, the holes are marked 18, 20, 22, and 24 (ounces per dozen). Five-hole versions are marked either 18, 20, 22, 24, 27 or 18, 20, 21, 24, 27.

These scales are found on either a wooden or metal base. This example has a painted green metal base and gold painted beam.

The beam is inscribed:  A-B-C EGG SCALE / PAT. 226712. The base is inscribed:  KEEP LEVEL / ABC / HYDA / IMPORTING Co. / VANCOUVER, B.C.

The ABC Egg Scale was produced in Canada under the 1922 patent of Alfred William Cook and William Allen of Vancouver, British Columbia.
