Sanitary Computing Scale Barrel-top platform
Subject
Description
The Sanitary Scale Company made this barrel-top platform scale. It is porcelain-coated, and the base and pedestal are cast iron—making this a relatively heavy scale. The visual distinguishing feature is the hexagonal barrel-casing, pan, and base.
With patents from 1922 to 1924 (including Canada), it was a latecomer in price computing scales. However, it was designed to be porcelain-coated, a first for price computing scales. With its low price and porcelain finish, it had a clear market advantage.
The company was originally in Chicago. In 1930, the September issue of a trade magazine, The Progressive Grocer, shows an advertisement for Sanitary with a Belvidere address. And the advertisement photos look like our scale. The advertisement date also aligns with the patent dates on the tag.
The tag lists: App. Type Serial H-10.

Hello...we are now in possesion of a Sanitary Scale Serial Number 4137. We would like to know its value and how many of these scales are still operating. The one we have works perfectly and I would call it in good to excellent condition.
Kind regards,
John Tackis
