Description

The DeKalb Chix private label was made by Jiffy-Way after 1953.

This scale is designed to weigh and grade chicken eggs from small to extra large. A decal shows normal graduation of 18–30 oz (ounces) per dozen and 1½–2½ oz each egg with a rainbow of size labels.

The decal reads: DEKALB CHIX / DEKALB AGRIC. ASS'N. / Inc. / DEKALB, ILL (Illinois). Jiffy Way produced scales for several private labels. (For other private labels, search for “Jiffy Way” within this website.)

In about 1953, the counterweight was changed to a steel cylinder with an adjustment screw to ensure accuracy (see photo of back). At this time, Jiffy-Way was under its second owner, C. C. Jolly Co. of Owatonna, Minn.

This is a half-roberval and pendulum scale with a screw to adjust the pendulum speed.

The patent was by Benjamin Zimmer of Minneapolis. The patent number was printed on Jiffy-Way scales for many years after it expired; so, it is not much help in dating an item.
