David Bradley Egg Scale (Sears) By Jiffy-Way, green
Subject
Description
The decal reads: DAVID BRADLEY / SEARS, ROEBUCK & COMPANY / db. “db” was the David Bradley logo for small agricultural equipment sold by Sears during the 1950s and ’60s; although the brand goes back to the early 1900s. In addition to Sears, Jiffy-Way produced scales for several other private labels. (For other private labels, search for “Jiffy Way” within this website.)
This example was made after 1953, the year the counterweight was changed to a steel cylinder with an adjustment screw to ensure accuracy (see photo of back). From 1948 into the 1990s, Jiffy-Way was under its second owner, C. C. Jolly Co. of Owatonna, Minnesota, who would have been the maker of this scale.
The scale is designed to weigh and grade chicken eggs from small to extra large. A decal shows normal graduation of 18–30 oz (ounces) per dozen and 1½–2½ oz each egg with a rainbow of size labels.
This is a half-roberval and pendulum scale with a screw to adjust the pendulum speed. It came in either red or green.
The patent was by Benjamin Zimmer of Minneapolis. The patent number was printed on Jiffy-Way scales for many years after it expired; so, it is not much help in dating an item.
