Description

The label shows this was made by Kuhl, who bought Jiffy-Way in the late 1990s.

This scale is designed to weigh and grade chicken eggs from small to extra large. Both the weight of an individual egg and weight per dozen are shown on the chart. A decal shows normal graduation of 18–30 oz (ounces) per dozen and 1½–2½ oz each egg with a rainbow of size labels. A cotter pin (missing in this example) suspended from a cutout slot on the face of the scale shows if the scale is level.

The decal reads: "Jiffy-Way” / T. M. REG. PAT. OFF. / INCORPORATED / NOW MFG. BY KUHL CORPORATION / FLEMINGTON / NEW JERSEY.

The scale is made from stamped metal painted red with an aluminum rocker arm.

This is a half-roberval and pendulum scale with a screw to adjust the pendulum speed.

The patent was by Benjamin Zimmer of Minneapolis. The patent number was printed on Jiffy-Way scales for many years after it expired in 1957. Even after the patent and machinery were sold to Kuhl Corporation in New Jersey in the late 1990s, the patent number was still on the label.

Kulh continued to make the traditional Jiffy-Way until about 2008 when the dies could no longer be maintained. They sold about 600 a year, mostly overseas and only in red.

In 2012, Kuhl began purchasing for resale a similar scale with a backplate shaped in a poultry silhouette. They now offer the new scale, in blue, as the Jiffy-III.
