Postal Scales (Under Development)

Description

Our collection of postal scales represents several mechanisms (How many ways can you weigh a letter?) for personal or postal system use. Some are built into letter openers; some are inside pens or mechanical pencils; some are set on shelf edges; while most were made for desks or countertops.

The world's first need for a postal scale was due to Great Britain's Uniform Penny Post, which started on January 10, 1840.

In Great Britain, home and office postal scales soon became a status symbol. Look for highly decorative metalwork, along with inlaid metals, stone, and cameos.
